Dumbledore is gay...

J.K. Rowling announced this at a book signing (I believe that's what it was). People seemed shocked and also wondered why she didn't make this a part of the book (actually come out and say he was gay). What do you guys think about this?

I, myself, don't really care if he was straight, gay, purple, orange, he was a wonderful wizard who cared so deeply for Harry and the people at Hogwarts. He fought for what was good and because of those things, he is a hero. It doesn't matter what his sexual orientation was. A good man isn't based on if he likes boys or girls. But I am curious to know what you think. Feel free to leave the comment anonymous if you want.

I thought the outing was odd, cause it didn't really make a difference of what kind of character he was. Who knows though, maybe there's something I'm missing.

Even if she pictured him as being gay when she planned the character, I found it puzzling that she announced it after not having ever made his sexuality an issue one way or another in the books. (Frankly the idea of whether he was gay, straight, bi, or asexual never even entered my mind as I was reading them.) It makes me wonder if something has been going on behind the scenes that we don't know about yet - something that made her feel it was important to make a statement about this. It all makes no difference to how I feel about the character or the books, it's just such odd timing.

BTW, my first time here - I followed a BlogHer link. Hi! :-)

I never thought of Dumbledore, indeed, ANY of the HP characters, as sexual beings...it just wasn't applicable to what she was writing about, you know? I did wonder, tho, about that purple suit Dumbledore wore to the orphanage...

But...Snape and Lupin...I DID fantasize about ;-)

SO. what the hell is this shit about. Do they mean the actor?? If they mean the character, this is just flippin weird and I now hate her cause she didn't need to put sexuality of any kind into the book. I don't think of those characters as one thing or the other. They are HP characters and they don't need this drama. IMO.
